Poetry - Argument

Blue skies and the sun is bright.
Girlfriend and I go fly a kite.
We laugh and smile and all is right.
But after dinner comes a minor slight.
Sarcastic comment, not too polite.
Our tempers flare and then ignite.
Sink into another fight.
It's gonna' be a long night...
Who's wrong? Who's right?
Seems it 'aint all black and white.
Wish that I could just make light,
But damn her words have a bitter bite.
Filled with so much God damn spite.
But no worse than words that I recite.
Designed to hurt and meant to incite.
We swear and scream 'til morning's light
And the new day is a brief respite.
But I know what will happen tonight,
And the flames have yet to reach their height.
For months now we have suffered the blight
Of a hate filled fall from lover's flight.
Things certainly do change alright...
I used to be a gallant knight,
And she was a cheerful playful sprite.
What went wrong to cause this plight?
What turns gold to sulfur pyrite?
I kinda' wish I had her insight...
If we truly tried then maybe we might...
I mean maybe it's possible for us to unite...
But to enter her heart one needs an invite.
And the chances of that are small as a mite.
Besides this whole mess is her fault despite
Her blaming me and attempts to indict.
Hurting me gives her some sick sort of delight.
I mean why else would my heart she purposely smite?
I bet my pain and confusion perversely excite.
Then again... perhaps not quite...
When she thinks I'm not looking she cries at midnight.
I'm told she paces with worry when I'm out of sight.
And last week she clung to my arm in a moment of fright.
Maybe we both are to blame and are both wound too tight.
I guess we can try to sit down and re-write
This vicious circle into something straight and finite.
Together bring dawn and end the twilight.
With patience and love we could stand upright.
And perhaps from the storm a brilliant ray will alight.
And we'll walk hand in hand through the golden sunlight.
